Properties of Titanium and its use for industrial use

Titanium and its alloys are widely used in a variety of industries ranging from aerospace, shipbuilding, power generation, oil and gas extraction, construction to high precision medical tools. It is highly valued for its qualities:

  • High strength to weight ratio
  • High corrosion resistance to acids
  • Wide service temperature range  
  • Withstands active elements including salt water
  • Extremely durable
  • Low electrical and thermal conductivity

While titanium is a quite expensive metal it substantially lowers the life cycle costs, does not require maintenance and in certain environments is irreplaceable.

ASTM International, formerly known as American Society for Testing and Materials (  international standards organization that develops and publishes technical standards for materials recognizes 31 grades of Titanium, generally divided into 4 classes:

  • commercially pure (CP, or unalloyed):
  • alpha,
  • alpha-beta
  • Beta

Laser Welding Process for Titanium

One of the most valuable properties of titanium is that in open air freshly cleaned metal immediately forms an oxide layer, which determines its further passivity towards other chemicals such as salt and acid solutions (corrosion resistance).

However, in the welding process, as the temperature reaches the melting point, the same oxides form faster and risk to contaminate the weld pool which will result in an impure and weak weld.

And this is where the expertise and thorough knowledge and use of technology is the key:


  • The welding area is enveloped in gas to prevent contamination.
  • The deburring tool used to break down the oxide layer prior to welding is not used for anything else to avoid weld contamination
  • The filler rod end is clipped before every use to prevent contaminants
  • The filler rods are stored in airtight containers before use
  • During the welding process, the rod stays within the as envelope at all times
  • Computer controlled laser beam placement

Weld Quality Acceptance Criteria


The above steps guarantee that the quality of the joint wellede at our facility for any type of joint – whether it is Butt Weld, Lap Weld (burn-through or seam weld), or a Fillet Weld. The color of the weld may serve a reliable indicator of the titanium laser weld quality with colors as silver, straw, bronze and brown – as acceptable quality, and violet, blue, green gray or white as not acceptable by the industry standards.
